Homely on Fourth Sunday of Easter
I AM A GOOD SHEPHERD (Jn 10:11).
I. LORD IS SHEPHERD.
Human beings are imperfect. So they need to unite under the direction of a leader.
The Jews united in a flock on their way to the Promised Land in the time of Moses. So do Christians now on their way to heaven (Exodus).
Christ conducts the flock of sheep into heaven because He is the way and the truth and the life (Jn14:6).
He has other sheep that do not belong to this fold. These also He must lead ( Jn 10:16).
II. KINDNESS OF THE SHEPHERD.
The good shepherd feeds his flock; in his arms he gathers the lambs, carrying them in his bosom, and leading the ewes with care ( Is 40:11). Moreover, he lays down his life for the sheep (Jn 10:11).
Christ is the good shepherd for He gives himself as sacrifice to free people from demons. This was predicted in Exodus.
III. SHEEP’S ATTITUDE TO THE SHEPHERD.
According to Jesus’ words, the attitude of the sheep is to know Him (Jn 10:14), and hearing His voice to unite in love (Jn 10:16).
This is knowing through experience (Lc 1;34). To hear His voice is not to hear the voice of the flesh and of demons ( Genesis 3). To unite in love is because there is only one flock and one shepherd (Jn 10:16).
